23 Months Imprisonment for South Azerbaijani Student

Tabriz, South Azerbaijan, Aug 24

Roya Saghiri, a South Azerbaijani student, was summoned for a 23-month prison sentence.

She wrote on Instagram page: “I was summoned to execute the verdict; tomorrow I will go to take this little liberty in the face of injustice and obvious oppression.”

Ms. Saghiri was detained in Tabriz’s protests in January 2018.

On July 2018, the judge of the appeals court upheld the sentence of 23 months imprisonment for “propaganda against the regime and insulting the elements of the system”. She faced this ruling for protesting the hijab.

She was previously tried in Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Tribunal of Tabriz on charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “insulting the supreme leader”.
