Not only the European Union is trying to release the well-known South Azerbaijani medical practitioner Ahmad Reza Jalali. Also, Nobel Prize winners, including Elfriede Jelinek, are involved in the case.
According to Gunaz Tv (the official media of South Azerbaijan), the European Union has been involved in the case of an internationally convicted and condemned South Azerbaijani doctor. According to information from the “Heilbronner Stimme” (Saturday), a joint protest note was issued by the EU member states in Tehran at the end of October, to protest against the regime’s conviction .
In addition, 75 Nobel laureates, including the writers Elfriede Jelinek (Austria) and Herta Müller (Germany) and chemists Gerhard Ertl and Joachim Frank, in a joint statement to the United Nations Ambassador to Iran with the request for the release of Mr.Jalalis.
Another letter written by the Committee of Concerned Scientists, had gone to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other European politicians. The Chancellery has confirmed the receipt of the letter, reports the newspaper. The Foreign Office said that it was following the development of the case “very attentively and with great concern”.
Ahmad Reza Jalali, a South Azerbaijani Turkish scientist was born in Tabriz, is graduate of medicine .He actually lives in Sweden and has worked in Italy and Belgium, was arrested in April 2016 during a home visit. Amnesty International has criticized him for having been sentenced to death in an extremely unfair trial for “corruption on earth”. There have also been allegations of espionage for Israel. His guilty verdict was based on confessions, which he claims to have been enforced by threats and torture.
