Petition to Save Lake Urmia

Tabriz,South Azerbaijan,Feb 3

A group of southern Azerbaijan environmental activists created a campaign to “save the Urmia lake”

The Signatures collected during  this campaign will be sent to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Lake Urmia, the largest lake in the Middle East and one of the unique ecosystems of the world, is registered as Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and listed as a wetland of international importance under the 1971 Ramsar Convention.
Over the last several years, Lake Urmia has shrunk significantly and its depth has fallen by seven meters.

According to UNEP report published at GEAS (February 2012) as a result of drying the lake vase amount of salt will be exposed to wind and consequently it will impact life of 76 million people living in Iran and neighboring countries such as Iraq, Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Unfortunately, nearly 96 percent of the entire catchment area of Lake Urmia is completely dried-up, according to the last report of Urmia Lake Recovery Headquarters report.

To join the campaign, you can visit @UrmiaLakeCampaignBot  in the Telegram application.

Despite the heavy spending on the war in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, and …, Iran Regime refuses to provide financing for the restoration of Urmia lake.
