Donald Trump parodies Game of Thrones in bizarre Iran sanctions announcement

WASHINGTON, U.S. Nov 2

Donald Trump has referenced hit television show Game of Thrones in a tweet about reinstating sanctions against Iran.

The montage consists of a photo of himself, clad in his usual dark suit, white button-down shirt and red tie, with the words: “Sanctions are coming” scribbled across the image.

It is a reference to “Winter is coming”, the famous motto of the House Stark in the HBO series.

It is written in Trump’s image in the near-match of the font used in promotional materials for Game of Thrones.

Trump did not tweet any words along with the montage, letting the image – which looks strikingly similar to the posters that are typically released to announce a new season of a TV show – speak for itself.

In a statement, HBO said: “We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes.”

HBO’s official Twitter account followed up by asking: “How do you say trademark misuse in Dothraki?”

The Trump administration announced earlier on Friday that it will revive all sanctions against Iran that had previously been suspended under a 2015 nuclear deal.

The announcement came six months after Trump announced he would withdraw the US from the landmark deal signed by Barack Obama, which lifted crippling sanctions against Iran. In return, the country had agreed to curb its nuclear programme.
